Tempest Storm, “The Girl with the Fabulous Front”, has had one of the longest careers in burlesque. She retired a little over 10 years ago, but still performs on occasion. I had the pleasure of watching this legend dazzle the stage at Miss Exotic World (now known as The Burlesque Hall of Fame Reunion) in 2008. She still has a phenomenal body and her striptease acts continue to thrill audiences across the country. She is a class act not to be missed!
“Burlesque’s Ball of Fire”, Betty Rowland, earned her name from her bright red hair and vivacious bump and grind routines. She is truly a legend and an icon who’s name is often heard in the burlesque community. There are still many who reminisce over her seductively energetic striptease acts.
“People always wondered what the girls do with the guys back there, figuring they’re having sex,” Rowland said. She said she “didn’t have time to get in trouble,” because of a busy schedule that consisted of four two-hour shows every day of the week, rehearsals in between and frequent naps between performances… Although considered lewd in its day, she often reminds people, “I wasn’t in porno.”
You should read the article in its entirety, however that part stood out to me. Often burlesque performers find themselves defending their art. It is different today, as many enter burlesque as a hobby or an impassioned interest. In “those days” many women were burlesque performers because there were no other means of income. I will not deny that. However, people often make assumptions without knowing what burlesque truly is or how seriously performers take it.

As some of you know, I was recently in Las Vegas for the biggest burlesque reunion in the country. Dixie Evans, curator of the Burlesque Hall of Fame Museum, is the legendary lady responsible for the event. She is a pioneer and a key player in keeping the art of the burly-q alive today.

“The Hottest Blaze in Burlesque”, Blaze Starr was known for her scintillating stage presence and her clever use of props. Her dazzling red hair and gorgeous figure made her more than appealing to the eye. Every time I watch her in old films, I utter the word “stunning”.
Another fun fact; Blaze Starr performed an act in which a trained panther removed her clothes. When the animal died unexpectedly she changed the act so that she herself was the panther. She snarled at her audience while on all fours. This became one of her regular acts. Upon performing it in Philadelphia she was arrested for obscenity.
