Flibanserin was first taken to treat depression. It wasn’t terribly successful as a mood stabilizer, but women noticed some positive sexual side effects – an increase in sexual desire as well as sexual activity.  What next?  The FDA is scheduled to debate the approval of this drug as treatment for women diagnosed with hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD) and/or female sexual dysfunction (FSD).  Both “disorders” are used to describe the complete absence desire.

5,000 women were tested.  Those who received the Flibanserin noticed an increase from 2.7 to 4.7 satisfying sexual experiences per month.  Those who received the placebo noticed an increase to 3.7 satisfying sexual experiences permonth.  The numbers don’t exactly sell me on the effectiveness of this drug, but I suppose anything is better than nothing.  For the sake of those in need of a good romp, I hope for the best.  Unfortunately, good sex comes to those who wait.  It seems as though the maximum benefits occur after about 40 weeks of use.

Some would argue that female sexual dysfunction disorders don’t actually exist. With men, they are either hard or they’re not.  Women don’t exactly have camping equipment in their pants to let you know whether or not they are turned on.   Opposers believe HSDD and FSD were made up by pharmaceutical corporations simply to sell more prescription drugs.  Paranoia aside, I certainly wouldn’t put it past them.  BUT, there are for too many women who simply lack any desire to have sex.  All they are left with is the desire of desire.  They crave complete love lives, or simply to experience the joy of self induced orgasms.

I am sure bloggers, both for and against, will have a field day with the Flibanserin debate.  I say make it available.  Men have a variety of choices when it comes drugs that treat sexual dysfunction.  They can take a little pill that will keep them up and ready for longer than some women would prefer.  Women deserve this option. Prescription drugs aren’t your thing?  Great.  Haven’t enjoyed… or wanted to enjoy a good fuck in years?  Are you ok with prescription drugs?  AWESOME.
